CB power supply to make you reach farther distance?
I originaly put a cobra 148gtl in my pickup with one 4 foot firestick antenna mounted to my bed. i was only able to reach about max five miles with it. I decided to get rid of it. Now i have a galaxy dx 929 and was wondering what antenna would be better to run. One is a 5 foot oil filled and the other is 5.5 foot coil. I was wondering which would be the better antenna. Then the main thing i was wondering was is it possible to run like a amp to your cb to make it push out more power to reach a farther difference. I would really aprreciate some info on this and if it is possible some name brand ones and were to get them?
The 4-foot Firestik would not have been the problem. It would have been the ground plane you used with the positioning of the antenna. Water under the bridge now since you got rid of it. Go with the 5.5′ with an air-wound coil as high up the antenna as possible for better current distribution. Thicker antennas have more bandwidth and therefore more even SWR across the band. I’d still stay with a helically wound coil though. Best bang for the buck.
Yes, it’s possible to run an amp for better reach…transmitting, not receiving. Antennas have reciprocity and that means you may still have “range” problems if the person you’re talking to doesn’t have the same effective radiated power as you do. Work your antenna and radio quality (good choice with the dx 929) before you play with extra power. It’s not necessarily the best thing to be the “alligator” on the band, i.e. all mouth, no ears.
Just a suggestion, if you want lots of talk time, legal worldwide skip, and multiple modes, this may be a good time to think about getting into ham radio. The solar cycle is on the upswing, and you may want to take advantage of it.
