Hi there. I have an ‘PMR Radio 446MHz’ Question?
I have few PMR 446 radios and I recently took out the insides of one and mounted it in to an old radio casing to make a base station 446 radio I also added a transformer in to it so that I can plug it in the mains with out having to use batteries. I’m using an old desktop CB mic and a home made coiled dipole antenna witch seems to work good the only problem is that the output power is very low witch is around 500mw…. Is there any way that I can add something on to the radio circuit so that can increase the output power? I also have a lot of old CB radios and burners and equipment and stuff is there any thing I can take out of the CB radio and add it to to PMR Radio circuit so that can get few watts of power from the PMR 446?
I don’t what a “PMR Radio” is, but 446MHz is in the Amateur Radio band. You will need a license to properly operate in this band. THie license is fairly easy to get, and you have enough interest to ask the question (and you know what a dipole antenna is), so you should have no problem.
Back to your question:
500mW is plenty of power to cover several miles over line-of-sight. There are external amplifiers you can buy. But most vendors do require a license for purchase, though. The other side of the equation is the receiving side. You might also need a preamp for the receiver, otherwise you will be able to take to stations, but won’t be able to here them, which defeats the purpose. The better course is to install better antenna, whichs boosts both transmitting and receiving side.
