Built tough to withstand the punishing marine environment, the Icom IC-M422 fixed-mount VHF radio is a must for safety-minded boaters. The radio is outfitted with a host of valuable features, including a large backlit LCD display with a four-step contrast, an intuitive, easy-to-use keypad, and a rugged waterproof housing that's submersible in 1 meter of water for up to 30 minutes. More significantly, the radio works with all 57 U.S., 61 Canadian, and 57 international channels, along with 10 weather channels from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA). The VHF channels offer an ideal way to communicate with other boaters--whether exchanging information on a hot fishing spot or sending out a distress signal--while the NOAA channels notify you when inclement weather is approaching. The radio--which mounts conveniently on your boat's dash using the included bracket kit--employs Icom's Force5Audio technology to boost the sound pressure levels and produce crisp, loud reception. The integrated microphone, meanwhile, is finely tuned to pick up voices while minimizing ambient background noise, such as a boat engine, wind, or seagulls. As a result, both casual conversations and urgent distress calls come through loud and clear. The IC-M422 offers several scanning modes, including an auto scan function that starts scanning whenever no signal is detected, a traditional scan mode that searches through all the tag channels in sequence, a priority scan mode that does the same but also monitors the distress channel (number 16), and a weather alert option that immediately switches the radio to the appropriate weather channel when a storm warning comes through. Users will also dig the Dual Watch and Tri-Watch functions. The former lets you communicate on a channel of your choice while also keeping an eye on emergency channel 16, while the latter monitors two channels--channel 16 and another channel--while receiving a third channel. The pair of "watch" modes guarantee that you won't miss an important emergency call from a distressed boater while your attention is otherwise engaged. As with other high-quality fixed-mount VHF radios, the IC-M422 comes with built-in Digital Selective Calling (DSC), which lets you send a formatted distress message in an emergency. DSC activates an instantaneous, continuous "mayday" signal that identifies your vessel, reports your position, and time stamps the message. But that's not all, as boaters can also use DSC to make contact with a specific boater of group of boaters in your area. DSC uses a unique ID (MMSI code) that's similar to a telephone number. To stay in contact with specific boaters, simply store each boater's unique address in your radio (the IC-M422 holds up to 100, each with a five-character name). Another nice detail is the IC-M422's GPS compatibility. When connected to a GPS receiver, the radio can send your GPS position to other boats, or it can poll the GPS location of another vessel and display it on your LCD screen in seconds, provided the navigational device accepts the NMEA data format. The polling function also checks whether a specific ship is in your communication range. Finally, the IC-M422 can double as a public address (PA) system for onboard announcements or ship-to-shore communication using an external loud speaker or hailer. The RX speaker function even lets you monitor the received audio from the loudspeaker or hailer while you sit on the deck or tower. Additional details include seven-step keypad backlighting, instant access to channels 16 and 9, and a low-voltage indicator for when the battery is running down. Housed in an attractive white case, the radio measures 6.47 by 3.06 by 5.47 inches (W x H x D) and is backed by a three-year warranty. What's in the Box IC-M422 radio, hand microphone, bracket mounting kit, power cable, user's manual.

Keep on top of emergencies while staying in touch with other boaters with the Standard Horizon STD-HX370SAS "intrinsically safe" handheld two-way VHF radio. Specifically designed for commercial marine use, the HX370SAS is factory programmed with all U.S., Canadian, and international marine channels, keeping you fully informed of all the latest oceanic activity. At the same time, the radio offers a host of weather channels from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA), so you can learn about approaching storms or hurricanes well before they hit. And if that weren't enough, it's also compatible with up to 40 commercial Land Mobile Radio (LMR) channels with CTCSS or DCS signaling, though a Standard Horizon dealer will need to program the channels (and users are responsible for obtaining the appropriate FCC license). As with any well-built marine radio, the HX370SAS is rugged and fully waterproof, with a compact design that can withstand submersion in 1 meter of water for 30 minutes. It's also a breeze to browse through the channels using the scan function, either without priority (starting from lowest to highest) or while monitoring emergency channels 16 and 9 and the NOAA weather alert, which warns you of inclement conditions. Other operational details include a Preset key that easily recalls your eight most-used channels, an oversized LCD with channel names, and a high-intensity strobe light that emits the internally recognized S.O.S. signal during emergencies--a must for any boater. The S.O.S. beacon can be seen from up to 1 mile away. The HX370SAS is also certified as "intrinsically safe," which means the radio itself and such accessories as the FNB-V57IS ni-cad battery pack, the CMP460 speaker microphone, and the FVP-31 voice scrambler meet the requirements of ANSI/UL913 6th edition for use in intrinsically safe environments, and are also built to withstand the day-in, day-out punishment of hostile commercial environments. The latter group includes: Class 1: flammable gases, vapors, or liquids; Div. 1 Group A (acetylene), Group B (hydrogen), Group C (ethylene), Group D (propane); Class 2: combustible dusts; Div. 1 Group E (metals), Group F (coal), Group G (grain); and Class 3: ignitable fibers and flyings. When you're not using the 5-watt radio, simply drop it in the included charging cradle, which will keep the rechargeable ni-cad battery operating at full capacity. Also included is an AC charger and a quick-draw belt clip. And because dead batteries can be a serious safety hazard on the water, the HX370SAS sports a battery life indicator on the LCD that warns you when the battery needs charging. Also compatible with optional speaker microphones, headsets, and voice scramblers, the HX370SAS radio measures 2.3 by 3.7 by 1.2 inches (W x H x D) and is backed by a three-year warranty. What's in the Box HX370SAS two-way radio, charging cradle, ni-cad battery, AC charger, belt clip, user's manual.

And as with the best fixed-mount VHF radios, the IC-M422 comes with built-in Digital Selective Calling (DSC), which lets you send a formatted distress message in an emergency. Housed in an attractive black case, the radio measures 6.47 by 3.06 by 5.47 inches (W x H x D) and is backed by a three-year warranty. What's in the Box IC-M422 radio, hand microphone, bracket mounting kit, power cable, user's manual.

Built tough to withstand the punishing marine environment, the Icom IC-M504 fixed-mount VHF radio is a must for safety-minded boaters. The high-quality radio is outfitted with a host of valuable features, including a full 168-character dot-matrix LCD display with a seven-step dimmer, an intuitive, easy-to-use front panel, and a rugged waterproof housing that's submersible in 1.5 meters of water for up to 30 minutes. The radio's receiver is no slouch from a performance perspective, with excellent specifications of 80 dB (typical) for intermodulation rejection, adjacent channel selectivity, and 0.22 uV (typical) high sensitivity. The result is a receiver that's powerful enough to catch a weak signal even between two strong signals, making it much less likely that you'll miss important transmissions. The extra-large speaker, meanwhile, is mounted into a well-spaced housing that delivers a bigger sound than the specified 4.5 watts of output power. As a result, both casual messages and urgent distress calls come through loud and clear even when the engine is roaring. The IC-M504 offers several scanning modes, including an auto scan function that starts scanning whenever no signal is detected, a traditional scan mode that searches through all the tag channels in sequence, a priority scan mode that does the same but also monitors the distress channel (number 16), and a weather alert option that immediately switches the radio to the appropriate weather channel when a storm warning comes through. As with other high-quality fixed-mount VHF radios, the IC-M504 comes with built-in Class D Digital Selective Calling (DSC), which lets you constantly monitor channel 70 or send a formatted distress message in an emergency. DSC activates an instantaneous, continuous "mayday" signal that identifies your vessel and time stamps the message. And when connected to a NMEA-enabled GPS receiver, your radio can easily send the position data of your boat or determine another vessel's location and then display it your LCD screen or the GPS itself. The polling function even checks whether a specific ship is in your communication range. And by adding the optional CommandMic III microphone (sold separately), users can control all available functions of the IC-M504 from a remote location, such as from the deck or the fly bridge. The CommandMic III--which includes a multifunction jog dial for quick and easy access to the settings--works from up to 60 feet away, and handles such functions as distress calls, DSC calls, squelch adjustments, foghorn signals, and more. It even doubles as an intercom, making onboard communication easier than ever. Other details include a PA function (when connected to a hailer horn or external speaker), an RX speaker function, four foghorn patterns, instant access to channels 16 and 9, compatibility with the UT-112 voice scrambler (sold separately) for communication privacy, and a sleek black housing. The IC-M504 measures 6.5 by 4.34 by 4.84 inches (W x H x D) and is backed by a three-year warranty. What's in the Box IC-M504 radio, hand microphone, mounting bracket kit, spare fuses, DC power cable, user's manual.

The CommandMic--which fits comfortably in the palm of your hand--in effect serves as a second station for your vessel. Need to call a fellow boater or make a distress call but don't have time to trudge all the way to the main radio? Pick up a CommandMic, an ideal communications accessory for the deck, fly bridge, or main cabin. The mic sports such features as a sizable built-in LCD and a comprehensive 11-button housing, which team up to offer control of everything from channel selection to squelch adjustments to Dual Watch scanning. You can even use the CommandMic to talk with the main unit as an intercom, making onboard communication easier than ever. The CommandMic comes with 19.8 feet of extension cable, a microphone hanger, and a mounting base for the cable connector (the connection point is nearly flush with the mounting surface). And crucially for a marine microphone, the unit is waterproof to JIS 7 standards, meaning you can submerge it in 1 meter of water for up to 30 minutes without damaging the electronics. The HM-157B, which boasts a sleek black housing (an alternate white version is available), measures 2.34 by 4.78 by 1.19 inches (W x H x D) and is covered by a three-year waterproof warranty. What's in the Box CommandMic microphone, extension cable, microphone hanger, mounting base, user's manual.

The CommandMic III--which fits comfortably in the palm of your hand--in effect serves as a second station for your vessel. Need to call a fellow boater or make a distress call but don't have time to trudge all the way to the main radio? Pick up a CommandMic III, an ideal communications accessory for the deck, fly bridge, or main cabin (the mic must be located within 70 feet of the main radio). The mic sports such features as a sizable built-in LCD, an extra-large 1.7-inch speaker, and a multifunction jog dial that offers quick and easy access to all the controls on your radio, including channel selection, volume, squelch, menu settings, DSC calls, and foghorn functions. You can even use the CommandMic III to talk with the main unit as an intercom, making onboard communication easier than ever. The CommandMic III comes with 19.7 feet of extension cable, a microphone hanger, and a mounting base for the cable connector (the connection point is nearly flush with the mounting surface). And crucially for a marine microphone, the unit is waterproof to JIS 8 standards, meaning you can submerge it in 1.5 meters of water for up to 30 minutes without damaging the electronics. The HM-162B, which boasts a sleek white housing (an alternate black version is available), measures 2.58 by 5.9 by 1.5 inches (W x H x D) and is covered by a three-year waterproof warranty. What's in the Box CommandMic III microphone, extension cable, microphone hanger, mounting base, user's manual.

Need to call a fellow boater or make a distress call but don't have time to trudge all the way to the main radio? The mic sports such features as a sizable built-in LCD and a comprehensive 11-button housing, which team up to offer control of everything from channel selection to squelch adjustments to Dual Watch scanning.

The easy-to-read display shows the channel number, incoming signal strength, and RE power output. The radio can pick up 10 NOAA Weather Radio channels so you always have up-to-the-minute weather news. Its Dual Watch function allows simultaneous monitoring of 2 channels. The heavy-duty microphone extends to 9 feet and has dynamic voice response circuitry for clear communication. The Cobra 18 WX ST II's squelch control eliminates background noise when there is no signal. The unit also provides instant access to emergency channels 9 and 19 for emergency announcements.
