Why You Should Have a Marine GPS
The vast majority of the current trendy technologies flooding out global markets find their origins in military inventions, especially in the last one-hundred years. Everything from microwaves and hard plastics to margarine and preservatives began as improvements to our militaries ability to perform in combat. One of these has become so mainstream that now, nearly every phone in the public domain comes equipped with a simple version of one; the GPS receiver.
Global positioning system (GPS) function by constantly sending and receiving signals to orbiting satellites and with four or more satellites, are able to calculate and transmit the receivers exact position on the globe. The more satellites and the stronger the signal, the faster and more accurate this fix will be, which is why many phone based GPS receivers are just that, phones with a GPS. They tend to take much longer to lock and few phone GPS can give any accuracy better than 100 feet. Thought his may not seem like much, in a non-urban environment this can make a world of difference.
The benefit of having a dedicated GPS device is that the devices sole function is to tell your exact relative position and time. Marine GPS devices are cost effective and durable tools used in a variety of locations for many different jobs and most cost less than smart-phones and other similar devices. Loggers, miners, fishers, boating enthusiasts, campers, hikers, and anyone who regulars the wild outdoors should have a Marine GPS.
Marine GPS are engineered the same way delicate construction electronics such as walkie-talkies and radios are: durable shatter proof plastics laced over a hard frame designed to resist impact. The type of weather that marine boating and logging expeditions endure demands an incredibly robust product. Most are water-resistant, shock-resistant, and have scratch-resistant screens.
These GPS come with high-frequency receivers that are far more sensitive than car or phone models, allowing them to pick up and lock-on to more satellites even in the harshest conditions. Often these hand-held versions come with an emergency band and even radios. Emergency crews across the globe carry marine GPS with them at all times.
Wide color screens and preloaded map cache make reading the GPS simple and eliminate load times. Some even come with barometers, electronic compass, internal memory, and a memory card slot. Often they have built in rechargeable lithium-ion batteries that can keep the deceive active for hours, even days on standby.
Marine GPS are the kind of product that many people need, and don’t even know it. Anyone going camping or boating, even back-packing through another country or commuting to another city benefits from the versatility a marine GPS can provide. They make the perfect gift for the man who has everything, or for the adventuring youth.

im thinking of buying a cobra hh325 hand held marine radio?
any advice would be usefufl
I have never used the H325 however I have used Cobra before and I would recommend you go for the Icom M31 over the H325. Although a little more expensive at around £99 the quality of it is so much better.
I have been using the M31′s for about 6 years now, they have been dropped numerous times, one of them sat on the bottom (in salt water) for 7 hours before the tide was low enough to recover it, it was still turned on when it came out!! Quick hose off with fresh water and we were using it again. I have two of them personally and use them at work all day everyday.
I couldn’t recommend them enough.
The only thing I have had to do with the Icom is replace the battery pack after 3 years of constant abuse.
Although not a review for the cobra I hope this helps
