Are rebroadcasts of Armed Forces Radio Network, AFRN, 1950-1960 era still available for listening?
I would sneak my 9 transistor radio to bed with me, plug in the one earpiece and wait for 11 pm Alaska time for AFRN to sign on. I would ponder through carrier signal, station id and sigh in, (very patriotic national anthem), news, then music !!!
It is the excitement of hearing my era the then new music and news of the then far away places and conflicts that I miss along with the radio hisses and static.
That was “real radio!”
Yes, there are many websites that sell (some free) old-time radio programmes on tape and CDs. Many that are offered are from the Armed Forces Radio Network, going back to the World War II era. Most were CBS, NBC and Mutual broadcasts that were, as they used to say, “transcribed and recorded for rebroadcast over the Armed Forces Radio Network for our fighting men overseas.” It’s very interesting getting a glimpse into the past on an art form that has been totally lost in our world. I’ve purchased quite a few of these programmes and I’ve learned a lot. My favourite show is CBS’ “Suspense!” Most expisodes were exquisitely written, nothing like modern-day television.
