What is the difference in frequencies and talkgroups in radio scanner?
i have all the police frequencies setup in my radio scanner.

and im able to use 5-6 channels to listen to what the cops are up to..
now i also heard that you need to use the talkgroups codes..
like
4336 10f A GANGS Gangs
4432 115 A ROBBERY Robbery
4496 119 A PEO DISP Parking Enforcement Dispatch
if i setup these 3 talkgroups.. does that mean i can listen to each categories specifically? like if i am only interested in robbery related incidents, i can tune into that talkgroup instead of the main frequency?
The answer to your question is Yes and No. Based on the information you provided, it looks like that you have a trunked system entered in your scanner. If it is scanning in trunked mode, the group ids should be showing up on the read out 4336 etc. I dont know the dept you’re scanning but I suspect the gangs and robbery talk groups are for gang operations and robbery detectives. Most robbery calls would be dispatched on the main frequencies to patrol units on the street and not a specific talkgroup for each crime. A robbery talk group might be used for a robbery stake out or other type operation.
If you’re looking for interesting calls you could set up your scanner the way mine is. I have the SWAT talk group active as well as fire and medic. If someone gets hurt during a robbery or other violent crime it will come over these talkgroups as well as a SWAT operations. I also have police mutal aid since these talk groups will become active during chases and BOLOs (be on the lookout) . If you listen to fire and medic you do have to deal with routine medical calls but the traffic volume is much lower and easier to follow than the police talkgroups. You can keep the police talkgroups locked out until one of the other talkgroups tips you off to activity that you want to listen to.
