Is there a radio or device that can scan every and all frequencies?

My husband is really into listening to radio and police scanner etc., etc., etc.

I’m looking to get him something special. He has all sorts of old shortwave radios and some police scanners that can barely pick up anything in this area. He doesn’t want a ham radio because he says he just likes to listen to all the obscure and far away stations. I guess he’s a voyeur …. only using his ears instead of eyes :lol:

Anyhow, I was hoping to get him some sort of UBER-radio of sorts. Maybe something that can scan every frequency known to man or something like that. I’d like to stay in a budget of a few hundred if I could.

Is there anything out there that’s like that? Maybe even a DIY kit or something? He’d LOVE that.

There are recievers that can scan a large amount of the spectrum. However, there is no receiver on the public market today that can scan ALL frequencies. The reason for this is because some of the frequencies are used for covert operations maybe by the federal government or military. Another is because of cell phones. The US blocks those frequencies on scanners made or sold in the US. Yet another reason is if there was such a receiver, it would be big, bulky, and cost way more than most of the public could afford.

Even the consumer grade receivers that do scan a lot costs in the thousands. My advice is look at one of the newer scanners put out by Radio Shack or Uniden. They are relatively inexpensive and scan what most of the public can listen to. If you do want to get him a better one, AOR, Icom, TenTec all make radios capable of this.
