Is there an inexpensive way to have a longer distance wireless Internet connection span 3-4 city blocks?
I’d like to set my Dad up with Internet, but he would only use it occasionally, probably once or twice a month. Not nearly enough to merrit the $30 it would cost for DSL or Cable (I checked the prices in his area).
I thought of dial-up, but he is gets his phone service through his cable company, so it’s voice over IP which can’t reliably connect using dial-up. I’ve tried dial-up and I’m lucky to get 9.8K (often slower or no connect) from his phone line, which is much to slow for today’s Internet.
I’ve thought about a data package through a cell phone company, but again that’s too expensive for the amount he’d be using it.
I live 2 1/2 blocks away and have DSL. This is too far for conventional WiFi. Is there a way to boost the signal? Again he wouldn’t use the Internet fequently so it shouldn’t be too expensive. What about shortwave radio?
Expensive to some is not to others. You mentioned the cost of a monthly bill. I guess if you look at spending say 300.00 on external antenna’s and mounting gear like a non pen mount, it would take up to 10 months to start being free.
With that said:
The real issues before you start this process is knowing if it is physically possible. A short site survey would give you a start. If you stood on your roof and/or on your dad’s roof, can you see each other without obstruction like tree’s, buildings etc in the way? If you can get a clear line of sight (remember the cheaper wireless signals beam path is not a laser) or optical line of sight to your Dad’s roof top, it may be possible.
It also depends on how much interference from other wireless signals you have in the area, so keep this in mind.
It won’t be blazing speed but enough to get you through for email and internet research.
They have 600mw (legal and commercial) routers and you use an outdoor extension antenna. I have done several of these using a 60deg beam path for the external antenna, (I was just covering a couple of blocks with this choice for a mini street fair.) The RSSI was good and the DBm’s were pushing close to a bouncing rate of neg 52-74. Not great but good enough to get 5.5 Megs of speed. If you need specific help on this, just shoot me an email.
I hope this helps, good luck.
